Nel 1930 viene consegnata alla Columbia University una tabulatrice contabile IBM appositamente modificata per svolgere i complessi calcoli matematici necessari ad analizzare i risultati di test scolastici e psicologici di massa. Dotata di speciali circuiti veloci e capace di trasferire automaticamente i dati da un registro all'altro, la macchina anticipa alcune caratteristiche tipiche degli elaboratori elettronici.

Research Workers made them
Richard warren and Robert M. Mendenhall, research workers at Columbia and statistical consultants for the Carnagie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching are responsible for most of the inventions which were first announced at the educator's convention in Atlantic City last week.

These new machines will be a tremendous boom to research. Dr. Ben D. Wood, Director of the Statistical Bureau, said yesterday, through making statistical procedure more accurate, much faster and far less expensive.
